Downtown Profile: Kana Winery - 2008-03-06
Kana Winery has made their home in the base of the Larson Building for a number of years. ''Kana'' is a native word for the spirit or the fire within a mountain, in reference to the perceived supernatural power of volcanic activity. On their website they explain that ''the Yakima and Columbia Valleys are awash with volcanic soil influences, providing terroir from the millennia of ''Kana'' escaping from nearby volcanic mountains, to lay resting as soil for our world-class vineyards.''
And those world-class vineyards are helping to create award-winning wines. Take a look at the following accolades that Kana has garnered this year:
*Gold medal for the 2006 ''Katie Mae'' and Silver medal for the 2004 Petite Verdot at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
*''89'' rating from Wine Spectator for the 2004 ''Ciel de Cheval'' and the 2005 ''Cuvee le Blanc'' and an ''88'' for the 2004 ''Katie Mae'' (receiving the highest score-to-price ratio of any Washington white wine)
*2005 ''Workingman's Red'' was ranked No. 1 in a huge line-up of 141 different red blends from across the Northwest in a tasting conducted by Northwest Wine Magazine
Kana Winery is not only creating award-winning wines, they are opening their door every day for wine tasting and for happy hour Monday-Saturday 5-6:30 with complimentary artisan breads & cheeses to accompany your glass of wine.
